On uncovering lessons in Alignment and Discernment
Last week, a coach messaged me on Facebook about my copywriting service. I do a lot of copywriting work with coaches and it’s very gratifying to see them finally find their voice and express their message.
We got on the phone.
50% of the things she said and 75% of the sound bytes she used represented the guru stuff that’d make me take cover and run the other way.
At the end of the conversation, my “rational” mind (aka the one controlling my mouth at the moment) agreed to write some copy on spec.
It didn’t feel right, yet there’s no apparent reason not to pursue this project.
Something was bugging me. I cringed when I got off the phone.
The wise part of me knew that she’s not my ideal client. Her demeanor made that part convulse. There was no connection and no spark – the basic ingredient I need for the co-creation process with my gold star clients to be fruitful.
Thankfully this wise part of me took over (as it always does) when I sat down to write the piece.
Instead of the “formula” she wanted to follow, I wrote in a way I’d want to tell her story – with humanity and integrity.
My clients don’t pay me just to cough up a few words. They hire me to hold them to a higher standard in their messaging and communications.
They work with me to articulate their Truth, so they can step up and own it – boldly, unapologetically and confidently.
If this approach resonates with her, we’ll make magic together. If not, I won’t be able to do good work – and why would I want to put myself through that?
I didn’t get the project. I was relieved. I was glad I let the wise part of me step up and do what’s in alignment with how I believe Honest Marketing should be.
From the outside, the “result” appeared “negative.” When you look closer, the lesson is “positive” – taking me closer to clarity and alignment.
We’ve all “self-sabotaged” and we beat ourselves up because we thought we were making ourselves “fail” – not achieving what “we’re supposed to” according to our societal conditioning.
Next time, before you berate yourself, look closer. Discern if it’s the “wise” part or the “fear” part of you driving. There’s a lesson in there.
